Troubleshooting

Full signal but no data? Turn on data roaming for your eSIM

A
Short answer

If your phone shows full signal but no data in Asia, the cause is almost always that data roaming is switched off for your eSIM line. Turn data roaming on for that specific line: on a travel eSIM this simply lets the profile reach its partner network and adds no charge on a Drift plan. This one toggle clears most “no data” cases.

The fix, in order

1
Settings → your eSIM line → Data Roaming ON
2
Confirm the eSIM is your data line
3
Re-toggle airplane mode, wait 60–90s
4
Restart if still dry

Do these on the eSIM line specifically: not your home line. On dual-SIM phones the roaming setting is per line, and enabling it on the wrong one leaves the eSIM dark.

Why a travel eSIM needs roaming on

A travel eSIM does not run on a home network: it connects through a local partner in the country you are visiting. To your phone, using that partner counts as “roaming,” so the data-roaming switch has to be on for the eSIM line or no data passes. On a Drift plan this adds no cost; it is simply how the profile attaches abroad.

Across Asia, busy hubs like Bangkok or Singapore register in seconds, but stepping off a regional flight into a smaller airport, or onto a ferry between islands in the Philippines or Indonesia, the handshake can lag. Give the phone a minute to register before you decide the toggle did not work.

If data still won’t pass

When roaming is on and the eSIM is set as the data line but nothing loads, the next most common fix is a manual network selection. Turn off automatic selection and pick the local operator your eSIM uses. If you are unsure which name to choose, Asia operator reference lists the leading network by country in Asia, and your country’s setup guide (for example /thailand-esim-setup-guide.html) shows the exact steps for your device. In remote islands, mountain valleys in Nepal, or border zones across Central Asia, manual selection resolves cases that automatic scanning cannot.

FAQ

Does turning on data roaming cost extra on a Drift eSIM?

No. On a travel eSIM the roaming toggle is just how the profile reaches its partner network abroad. It adds no charge on a Drift plan.

Full signal but no internet: what is the first thing to check?

Data roaming for the eSIM line. It is off by default on many phones, and switching it on for that specific line clears most cases.

Do I toggle roaming on my home line or the eSIM?

The eSIM line. Roaming is a per-line setting on dual-SIM phones; enabling it on your home line does nothing for the eSIM.
