Do I need to set an APN by hand?

A
Short answer

No. On a Drift Asia eSIM you do not set an APN by hand: the profile carries it and your phone applies it automatically when the eSIM installs. If you have full signal but no data, the cause is almost never a missing APN; it is usually data roaming switched off for the eSIM line, or your data still assigned to your home SIM. Fix those two first before touching any advanced setting.

Why the APN sets itself

An APN (Access Point Name) tells the phone which gateway to use for mobile data. On older physical SIMs you sometimes typed it in by hand. A modern travel eSIM does not work that way: the carrier profile you install already contains the correct APN, and your phone applies it silently the moment the eSIM activates. There is nothing for you to type.

That is true across Asia. Whether busy hubs like Bangkok or Singapore register in seconds, but stepping off a regional flight into a smaller airport, or onto a ferry between islands in the Philippines or Indonesia, the handshake can lag, the APN travels inside the profile: it does not change because you crossed a border or switched networks.

If you were told to enter an APN

Some generic guides still tell travelers to add an APN manually. On a Drift Asia eSIM that step is unnecessary and can actually break data if you enter the wrong value. Leave it on automatic unless support tells you otherwise.

Signal bars but no data: the real fixes

When the phone shows bars but nothing loads, work through these before you ever think about an APN:

1
Turn data roaming ON for the eSIM line
2
Set the eSIM as your data line
3
Re-toggle airplane mode, wait 60–90s
4
Restart the phone

Data roaming sounds alarming, but for a travel eSIM it is simply how the profile reaches its partner network abroad: it does not add charges on a Drift plan. This single toggle clears the large majority of “no data” cases.

The rare case where a manual APN helps

Occasionally, on a small number of older Android handsets, the profile’s APN does not apply cleanly and data stays down after every fix above. Only then does a manual APN make sense: and even then you should use the exact value for your plan, not a value copied from another provider.

If you reach that point, check Asia operator reference for the network your eSIM uses in Asia, or open your country’s setup guide (for example /thailand-esim-setup-guide.html) for step-by-step device settings. In remote islands, mountain valleys in Nepal, or border zones across Central Asia, a manual network selection is far more often the real fix than an APN change.

FAQ

Do I need to enter an APN for my Drift eSIM?

No. The APN is included in the eSIM profile and applied automatically when the eSIM installs. You do not type it in.

I have signal but no data: is the APN wrong?

Almost never. The usual causes are data roaming switched off for the eSIM line or data still assigned to your home SIM. Fix those first; the APN is rarely the problem.

Someone told me to add an APN manually. Should I?

Not on a Drift Asia eSIM. A wrong manual APN can break data that would otherwise work. Leave it on automatic unless Drift support gives you a specific value.

Where do I find the right network if I must select manually?

Use the Asia operator reference at /operators-thailand.html, which lists the leading networks by country in Asia, or your country’s setup guide for exact device steps.
