Armenia's three mobile networks explained

Armenia is served by three mobile operators that collectively cover the vast majority of the country's populated areas with 4G LTE. Understanding which network does what helps you pick the right eSIM or SIM card before your trip.

Viva-MTS launched 4G in 2012 and has built the most extensive rural footprint over that period. Locals in Tavush and Syunik provinces consistently default to it -- that reputation holds. Ucom (formerly Orange Armenia) runs on 800, 1800, and 2600 MHz bands, giving it solid building penetration in Yerevan and fast speeds where capacity is available. Team Telecom, the rebranded Beeline operation, uses the unusual 450 MHz band for extended range -- useful in remote areas but slower for data.

Yerevan city coverage

Yerevan is well-served by all three networks. Speeds in central districts typically land between 40 and 80 Mbps on 4G, with occasional higher readings near Republic Square and the Northern Avenue corridor where Ucom's 5G pilot zones operate.

Zvartnots Airport: All three operators have branches in the arrivals hall. If you want a local SIM, you can get one immediately after clearing immigration. With an eSIM, you are already connected before you land.

Lake Sevan and the M10 highway

Lake Sevan is Armenia's most visited destination outside Yerevan. The M10 highway running from Yerevan to Sevan is well-covered by 4G -- Viva-MTS performs most consistently along this route. The lakeside towns of Sevan and Martuni have good signal from all carriers.

Along the Sevan loop road

The northern shore between Sevan town and Tsovagyugh has reliable 4G. The southern shore becomes patchier after Vardenis -- signal drops to 3G in sections before disappearing near the eastern end of the lake, which is also closer to the border zone. Stay on the northern M10 route for consistent connectivity.

Sevanavank Monastery, sitting on the peninsula that juts into the lake, has solid Viva-MTS coverage -- you can upload photos without switching to WiFi. The monastery grounds have become a popular spot for travelers working remotely for a few hours.

Dilijan and Tavush province

Dilijan is often called the Switzerland of Armenia. The town itself has 4G coverage from Viva-MTS and Ucom -- speeds are slower than Yerevan but adequate for video calls and navigation. The forested hiking trails outside town become progressively more patchy as you gain altitude.

Good 4G in Ijevan town. Rural roads approaching the Azerbaijan border have weak or no signal -- this is a genuine dead zone, not a network quirk.

Garni, Geghard, and the Azat River Gorge

The day-trip circuit from Yerevan to Garni Temple and Geghard Monastery is one of Armenia's most popular routes. Coverage is better here than many travelers expect -- Viva-MTS maintains 4G along the main road from Yerevan through Garni village.

The Symphony of Stones basalt formation near Garni has reliable signal -- it is a short walk from the main road where coverage is solid. The gorge hike further into the Azat River valley loses signal progressively.

Tatev and southern Syunik

Syunik province in southern Armenia is the most remote part of the country on the main tourist trail. The road from Yerevan to Goris (the gateway to Tatev) is mostly covered by Viva-MTS 4G along the M2 highway, with gaps in higher mountain sections.

Syunik dead zones: The mountain passes between Sisian and Goris drop to 3G or no signal in several sections. The road through Vorotan Gorge has coverage gaps. Download offline maps before leaving Goris -- do not rely on live navigation in the passes.

Goris town has good 4G from Viva-MTS. Tatev village and the Wings of Tatev cable car upper station have intermittent coverage. Tatev Monastery itself sits in an area with partial Viva-MTS signal -- enough for messaging, not reliable for video calls.

5G in Armenia: where it stands in 2026

5G in Armenia is in early stages. Ucom is the most active on 5G rollout, with limited coverage patches available in central Yerevan -- particularly around Republic Square, Northern Avenue, and parts of Kentron district. Viva-MTS has announced 5G expansion but deployment is still limited as of mid-2026.

For practical purposes, 4G LTE is what you will use across Armenia in 2026. The 5G zones in Yerevan are a bonus if your device supports it, not something to plan around. Most international travel eSIMs route on 4G infrastructure regardless.

Border zones and restricted areas

The situation around the former Nagorno-Karabakh region has affected network infrastructure in parts of eastern Armenia. Coverage in border zones near Azerbaijan can be patchy and unpredictable -- Viva-MTS has the most infrastructure in these areas but gaps exist. Check current coverage maps before traveling to remote eastern regions.

Important: Do not attempt to use Armenian SIM cards or eSIMs if crossing into Azerbaijan. The two countries are technically in conflict and border crossings between them are closed to most travelers. Plan separate connectivity for each country if visiting both on the same trip.

Most modern smartphones support all relevant bands. If you are using an older or budget device, check that it supports Band 7 (2600 MHz) at minimum -- this is the core 4G band for both Viva-MTS and Ucom's fastest service.

Beyond Yerevan and the major tourist destinations, Armenia has a network of smaller towns and regional centers that most travelers pass through or visit. Coverage in these locations is generally good from Viva-MTS and adequate from the other carriers.

What to do when signal drops

Even with the best preparation, you will encounter signal gaps in Armenia's more remote areas. Here is how to handle them without losing your location or your itinerary.

  • Offline maps first: Google Maps and Maps.me offline downloads are the single most important preparation for Armenia road travel. Download before leaving Yerevan, not at the last guesthouse before the mountains.

  • Ask locals: In Armenian villages, someone will almost always help with directions. The language barrier is manageable with Google Translate's offline Armenian mode.

Maximizing your signal in Armenia: practical field tips

Armenia's terrain is dominated by volcanic plateaus and deep river gorges, which creates predictable signal behavior once you understand the geography. The Ararat Valley floor -- where Yerevan, Artashat, and Ararat city sit -- receives the strongest LTE signal in the country. All three operators maintain dense tower networks here to serve the bulk of the population. Signal strengths in central Yerevan routinely exceed -70 dBm on Ucom and Viva-MTS, which translates to fast, reliable speeds whether you're working from a cafe in Kentron or navigating Vernissage market.

Once you leave the valley and climb toward the highland regions, signal behavior shifts. The A1 highway north toward Dilijan maintains good 4G coverage in the valley sections, but the tunnel approaches and switchbacks near Semyonovo can drop to 3G or edge coverage briefly. Budget 10-15 minutes of interrupted connectivity when transiting these mountain passes. The A2 east toward Sevan stays mostly covered along the lake's western shore, but the road around the eastern shore near Geghamasar sits in a partial dead zone. Download maps before departure.

Border zones with Azerbaijan require extra caution.
