Why Set Up Your eSIM Before You Leave Home

The single most important eSIM rule for Azerbaijan is to complete installation and activation while you still have reliable Wi-Fi at home. Once you land at Heydar Aliyev International Airport, the airport Wi-Fi exists but can be congested, and the process of scanning a QR code or entering an activation code is far smoother from a comfortable seat at home than from a baggage carousel.

Unlike a physical SIM card, an eSIM does not require inserting anything into your phone. The profile is downloaded digitally and stored inside your device's embedded chip. Once installed, it connects automatically to compatible networks -- in Azerbaijan's case, Azercell or Bakcell -- as soon as you have a signal.

Step 1: Check eSIM Compatibility

Before purchasing any plan, confirm your device supports eSIM. Compatible devices include:

  • iPhone: iPhone XS, XR, and all later models (iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 series). iPhone 14 and later (US models) are eSIM-only -- physical SIM trays were removed entirely.

Once active, your eSIM requires no further configuration. Track your data usage in your provider's app or in your phone's Settings under Mobile Data usage statistics. In Baku, where 4G speeds are fast (typical 20-50 Mbps), it is easy to consume data quickly if streaming video -- consider downloading maps, music, and episodes for offline use before leaving your hotel's Wi-Fi.

If you cross into Georgia or Armenia on a Caucasus road trip, check whether your plan includes those countries or whether you need to purchase an add-on or separate plan. Many Caucasus regional bundles include all three countries on one eSIM profile.

Deleting the eSIM After Your Trip

When you return home, you can delete the Azerbaijan eSIM profile from your device (Settings > Mobile Data > select the eSIM > Delete). This frees up one of your device's eSIM slots for a future trip profile. Most devices support 5-10 stored eSIM profiles, though only one or two can be active simultaneously. (2) Check that your plan has not exhausted its high-speed data allowance (some plans throttle to slower speeds after the main allowance is depleted). (3) Confirm you are connected to 4G rather than 3G or 2G -- the signal indicator in your status bar shows the technology. If showing 3G in an area that should have 4G, try manual network selection to force the 4G band.

eSIM on iPhone: Advanced Settings

iPhone users have additional granular control over eSIM behavior through the Settings > Mobile Data menu. Key settings for Azerbaijan travel:

  • Allow Mobile Data Switching: When enabled, iPhone automatically uses whichever SIM has better data connectivity. Useful in remote areas where your eSIM has weak signal and your home SIM (if kept active) might have roaming fallback.
