The short answer

Choose your eSIM Mongolia according to the length of your stay and your expected data use. 5 GB is generally enough for maps, messaging and social media, while video streaming and hotspot use require more data. The plans shown range from 1 to 20 GB and start at $5.90. They are fully refundable within 30 days provided the eSIM has not been used on a network at the destination. Coverage in Mongolia

Mongolia is the least densely populated country in the world, and its networks reflect that: excellent 4G in Ulaanbaatar, main cities and along major roads, but large blank areas in the remote steppe, desert and highlands. MobiCom covers 95% of the population, Unitel 88%, both with 4G speeds of 20 to 30 Mbps. Unitel has Mongolia's most advanced network and ran the first 5G tests in Ulaanbaatar. For travellers on the main tourist circuit (Ulaanbaatar, Terelj, Karakorum, Lake Khuvsgul), coverage is workable. For deep steppe or Gobi ger-camp travel, expect long stretches with no signal on any network.

Local operators

MobiCom

4Glocal eSIM available

The largest operator, covering 95% of the population with 4G in Ulaanbaatar and main cities. Speeds average 25 to 30 Mbps. Has a dedicated tourist SIM bundle. Strong in the capital and along major roads.

Unitel

5G/4Glocal eSIM available

The widest coverage in Mongolia, reaching 88% of the population and most tourist destinations. First to launch 4G in 2016 and ran Mongolia's first 5G test in Ulaanbaatar in 2022. The best choice for travel beyond the capital into the countryside.

Skytel

4Glocal eSIM available

Covers 80% of the population including provincial capitals and main transport routes. Speeds are slower at 15 to 20 Mbps. A budget option for city stays, but less reliable for remote travel.

⚠️ A Mongolia plan covers Mongolia only. China and Russia border the country but are separate and need their own plans. For remote wilderness travel, no plan guarantees coverage; offline maps are essential.

Buying a local SIM instead

Where to buy: Ulaanbaatar Chinggis Khaan International Airport arrival hall (MobiCom and Unitel both have counters) and operator stores in the city. Passport required.

Price: 3 to 10 USD for a SIM with data; 3GB plans start around 5 USD. Very affordable. USD

Local SIMs are cheap and easy to buy at the airport with just a passport. A travel eSIM is the no-counter option and works on landing, but for remote steppe or Gobi travel a local Unitel or MobiCom SIM is the most reliable option, since coverage varies significantly by area.

The verdict

The verdict

Our eSIM wins when: you want to land in Ulaanbaatar connected with no counter visit for a city and nearby-nature trip where 4G coverage is reliable.

A local SIM wins when: you travel into the countryside or the Gobi, where a local Unitel or MobiCom SIM gives the best reach and very cheap local prices.

On the competition: No eSIM or SIM gives you reliable coverage across Mongolia's remote wilderness. What matters is which network reaches furthest on your specific route: Unitel and MobiCom for the widest reach, Skytel for budget city use. For deep steppe, plan for offline maps regardless.

Bottom line: For Ulaanbaatar and the nearby national parks, a travel eSIM lands you online with no fuss. For serious countryside or Gobi travel, a local Unitel SIM gives the best reach at very low cost, and even then you will lose signal for long stretches.

Mongolia eSIM FAQ

Is there 5G in Mongolia in 2026?

Early-stage only. Unitel ran Mongolia's first 5G test in Ulaanbaatar in 2022 and limited 5G is available in the capital. Almost all travel uses 4G, at around 20 to 30 Mbps in the cities.

Will I have mobile coverage in the Mongolian steppe or Gobi Desert?

Only partially. Coverage follows the main roads and ger camps near tourist routes, but large areas of the steppe and desert have no signal on any network. Unitel and MobiCom reach furthest, but offline maps are essential for any remote travel.

Which network is best for tourists in Mongolia?

Unitel for the widest national coverage including remote areas, and the first 5G in Ulaanbaatar. MobiCom for the capital and main cities with a tourist-friendly SIM bundle. Both are solid choices.

Is a local SIM cheaper than a travel eSIM in Mongolia?

Yes. Local SIMs cost around 5 USD for 3GB and registration needs only a passport. A travel eSIM costs more but saves the airport counter visit and works on landing.
