New Chitose gave us the single most instructive pair of measurements in our entire field test database. In June 2026, on the same trip and the same travel eSIM, we recorded 18.6 Mbps download inside the CTS terminal and 189 Mbps in central Sapporo, a tenfold gap between an airport and the city it serves, and the widest we have measured anywhere in Asia. Both numbers are in the open database with their dates and places attached.

The gap is not a Hokkaido anomaly, it is the airport effect at its most extreme. Terminals are steel and concrete boxes where entire arrival waves hit the same cells at once, and CTS funnels every ski season charter and Tokyo shuttle through a compact building. Our Kansai reading tells the same story at 19.3 Mbps against city readings in the triple digits, and the Japan-wide median across our 12 measurement points sits at 79.9 Mbps. The pattern is consistent: in Japan, the airport is the slowest network moment of the trip, and it still works.

Do not judge the eSIM at CTS

18.6 Mbps still loads maps, train times, and messages without drama. If data flows at all, the eSIM is fine and the terminal is the bottleneck. Reinstalling in a panic can burn a one-time activation for a problem the train to Sapporo solves in forty minutes.
