19.3 Mbps at KIX: the most useful slow reading we own
In June 2026 we ran a speed test inside Kansai airport on a travel eSIM, and the result was 19.3 Mbps download. In a database where Tokyo Haneda measured 221 Mbps, that number stands out, and it is exactly why we publish it. KIX sits on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, terminals are steel-heavy structures, and arrival halls concentrate hundreds of phones on the same cells at once. Airports are frequently the worst place you will use your eSIM all trip, and Kansai is our clearest proof.
Here is the context that turns the number from alarming to useful. The Japan-wide median across our 12 measurement points is 79.9 Mbps, four times the KIX reading. Our database holds an even sharper twin of this pattern in the north: Sapporo Chitose airport measured 18.6 Mbps while central Sapporo measured 189 Mbps the same trip, a tenfold gap between an airport and its city. The airport floor is not the country ceiling, and judging a network, or your eSIM, by the terminal is the single most common arrival mistake.
There is also a timing effect worth knowing: terminal congestion breathes with the flight schedule. A reading taken as three arrival waves empty into the same hall and one taken forty minutes later can differ by multiples, which is another reason a single slow test proves nothing. A slow speed test at KIX is not a broken eSIM. Reinstalling in a panic can burn a one-time activation for a problem that solves itself on the train to Osaka. If data flows at all, ride it out of the terminal before judging anything.
The Kansai arrival playbook
