How the score is built

The Mobile Speed Index is the national median mobile download speed from the Speedtest Global Index (Ookla), banded to 0-100. Where we have run our own field tests, those measurements are blended into the score.

Source - Speedtest Global Index, median mobile download, reviewed annually.
Banding - higher bands for faster medians, so the score spreads real differences.
Read with care - a low score can mean heavy WiFi use, not poor coverage. Japan is the classic case: abundant free WiFi pulls the mobile median down. Pair this with the 5G Coverage Index.
