Coverage in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is one of the most connected places on earth, with four strong networks blanketing a small, dense territory. In the November 2025 Opensignal report, CMHK led 5G download speed at around 187 Mbps, with csl close behind near 176 Mbps and SmarTone around 112 Mbps. 5G launched in 2020 on the 3.5 GHz band and now reaches almost everywhere a traveller goes, including the MTR, malls and the harbourfront. The only weak spots are deep inside some buildings, long road tunnels and the more remote hiking trails in the country parks.

Local operators

CMHK (China Mobile Hong Kong)

5G/4Glocal eSIM available

The fastest 5G network in the November 2025 Opensignal report, with roughly 187 Mbps median 5G download and the lowest latency in the city. Strong, dense coverage across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories.

csl

5G/4Glocal eSIM available

Close behind CMHK on 5G speed (around 176 Mbps) and tied for the best overall coverage. A safe all-round choice with very wide retail availability.

SmarTone

5G/4Glocal eSIM available

Solid 5G (around 112 Mbps) and a reliable network, slightly behind CMHK and csl on raw speed but more than fast enough for any traveller.

3HK (Hutchison)

5G/4Glocal eSIM available

Useful if your trip also touches mainland China or Macau, since its tourist packs often bundle roaming across all three. Network is good in the urban core.

⚠️ A Hong Kong plan covers the territory itself. Mainland China and Macau are separate: if your trip crosses into either, check whether your plan is single-territory or a regional plan that bundles all three, since Hong Kong eSIMs do not automatically work across the border.

Buying a local SIM instead

Where to buy: Hong Kong International Airport arrivals, 7-Eleven, Circle K and carrier shops across the city

Price: 8 to 20 for a tourist data SIM USD

Hong Kong is compact and dense, so any of the four networks works well in the city. A travel eSIM saves you the airport counter and is the simplest option for a short city trip. Local prepaid SIMs are cheap and need no passport registration, unlike many other Asian markets.

The verdict

The verdict

Our eSIM wins when: you want to land connected for a short city trip without hunting for a counter, which matters at a busy hub airport like HKG.

A local SIM wins when: you stay longer or want the absolute lowest price per GB, since local prepaid SIMs are cheap and need no registration.

On the competition: Unlimited plans rarely pay off here. Hong Kong is small, wifi is everywhere, and 5G is fast on all four networks, so a modest capped data pack covers most trips comfortably.

Bottom line: For a typical few-day Hong Kong visit, a travel eSIM is the easy call: land online, skip the queue. If you are also crossing into China or Macau, pick a regional plan that bundles all three rather than a Hong Kong-only eSIM.

Hong Kong eSIM FAQ

Does an eSIM work at Hong Kong airport on arrival?

Yes. Activate it before you fly and it connects to one of the local networks the moment you land at HKG, before you reach immigration. No counter, no SIM swap.

Will my Hong Kong eSIM work in mainland China or Macau?

Not automatically. Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China are separate for mobile data. If your trip crosses the border, buy a regional plan that explicitly bundles all three, or a separate plan for each.

Which network is fastest in Hong Kong in 2026?

CMHK led the November 2025 Opensignal report at around 187 Mbps median 5G download, with csl close behind near 176 Mbps. In practice all four networks are fast enough for anything a traveller does.

Is 5G widely available in Hong Kong?

Yes. 5G launched in 2020 and now covers the whole urban area, including the MTR and malls. The only gaps are deep indoors, in long tunnels and on remote country-park trails.
