Dense urban 5G; works deep in the MTR.
Hong Kong is one of the most connected places on earth, with four strong networks blanketing a small, dense territory. In the November 2025 Opensignal report, CMHK led 5G download speed at around 187 Mbps, with csl close behind near 176 Mbps and SmarTone around 112 Mbps. 5G launched in 2020 on the 3.5 GHz band and now reaches almost everywhere a traveller goes, including the MTR, malls and the harbourfront. The only weak spots are deep inside some buildings, long road tunnels and the more remote hiking trails in the country parks.
Typical local SIM: $8 to 20 for a tourist data SIM. Usually sold at Hong Kong International Airport arrivals, 7-Eleven, Circle K and carrier shops across the city. Hong Kong is compact and dense, so any of the four networks works well in the city. A travel eSIM saves you the airport counter and is the simplest option for a short city trip. Local prepaid SIMs are cheap and need no passport registration, unlike many other Asian markets.
For a typical few-day Hong Kong visit, a travel eSIM is the easy call: land online, skip the queue. If you are also crossing into China or Macau, pick a regional plan that bundles all three rather than a Hong Kong-only eSIM.
The fastest 5G network in the November 2025 Opensignal report, with roughly 187 Mbps median 5G download and the lowest latency in the city. Strong, dense coverage across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories.
Close behind CMHK on 5G speed (around 176 Mbps) and tied for the best overall coverage. A safe all-round choice with very wide retail availability.
Solid 5G (around 112 Mbps) and a reliable network, slightly behind CMHK and csl on raw speed but more than fast enough for any traveller.
you want to land connected for a short city trip without hunting for a counter, which matters at a busy hub airport like HKG.
you stay longer or want the absolute lowest price per GB, since local prepaid SIMs are cheap and need no registration.

It is the median price per GB of mid-tier plans in the live Hong Kong catalogue. Small 1 GB teasers and 50 GB or larger bulk plans are excluded so the figure reflects a typical traveller choice.
The page shows the current mobile speed indicator, a transparency score and the main local operator. These are destination-level signals, not a guarantee for every street or device.
The decision section compares the practical trade-offs. A travel eSIM is usually simpler for a short visit; a local SIM can make sense when you need a local number, longer service or local pricing. Check the current conditions before deciding.
Price per GB is the median of mid-tier plans from the live Hong Kong catalogue. Network and transparency indicators come from the shared Drift dataset and are refreshed monthly.
