Coverage in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is well connected for its size. 4G LTE reaches close to 100% of the population, and commercial 5G launched in December 2025 with Dialog and SLT-Mobitel, though 5G is still concentrated around Colombo. Dialog has the widest overall coverage and over half the market; SLT-Mobitel was rated the fastest network in 2024 and is strong in rural areas. For travellers, 4G is what you will use almost everywhere and it comfortably handles streaming, maps and remote work. Coverage is reliable across Colombo, Kandy, the hill country, the south-coast beaches and the cultural triangle, with only the most remote interior thinning out.

Buying a local SIM instead

On the competition: 5G exists now but only around Colombo, so do not pick a plan on 5G claims; almost all your usage will be 4G, which is plenty. Coverage and price matter more. Dialog and Mobitel both cover the island well; Hutch is cheaper but urban-focused.
