The rare case where we measured both airports

Most airport connectivity advice is secondhand. This one is not: our field test database (open data, CC BY 4.0) contains speed measurements taken inside both Tokyo airports on the same kind of travel eSIM, on 5G, in June 2026. At Haneda we recorded 221 Mbps download, the fastest airport reading in our entire Asia dataset. At Narita the same setup measured 117 Mbps. Both numbers sit above the Japan-wide median of 79.9 Mbps across our 12 in-country measurement points.

The practical translation: whichever Tokyo airport you land at, the network waiting for you is faster than most home broadband. The difference between 221 and 117 Mbps changes nothing about your arrival, both download a map tile, a Suica top-up, or a train timetable instantly. What the two readings really tell you is that Japan does not make you pay a connectivity penalty at the border, the fast network starts at the gate.

Why airports can surprise you

The three-tap arrival at HND or NRT

The sequence is identical at both airports. Buy the Japan eSIM before you travel and install it at home over wifi, where any QR scan or activation hiccup costs nothing. Leave the line disabled for the flight. When the wheels touch, enable the eSIM line, set it as your mobile data line, and turn data roaming on for that line only. Every one of those readings was taken in June 2026 on the same class of travel eSIM you would install for your own trip, in the exact places tourists stand.

Two things stand out in that spread. First, nothing in central Tokyo dropped anywhere near unusable, even the slowest reading handles video calls. Second, the density of the city produces variation: Shinjuku at 121 Mbps and Yoyogi at 40.9 Mbps are twenty minutes apart. That is normal urban 5G behavior, not a network problem, and it is why we publish per-place records rather than a single national number.
