Daily data use by activity: the real numbers

Most travellers significantly overestimate or underestimate their data consumption. The overestimators pay for unlimited plans they barely use. The underestimators run out on day four of a two-week trip and spend an evening trying to top up from a convenience store. The foundation of any accurate data estimate is knowing what each activity actually costs.

Navigation is the most consistent data use across all Vietnam itineraries. Google Maps turn-by-turn navigation in a Vietnamese city uses approximately 5 to 10 MB per hour of active navigation. Pre-downloading the offline map for the city you are in reduces this to essentially zero, since GPS positioning works without data and only the tile refresh requires a connection. Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue are all available as offline downloads in Google Maps and take 150 to 300 MB each, a one-time cost that eliminates ongoing navigation data use.

Social media is the largest variable in any data estimate. Browsing Instagram with video reels enabled uses 100 to 300 MB per hour depending on scroll speed and video length. Posting a photo or short video uses 5 to 20 MB. Browsing without video autoplay cuts consumption significantly. TikTok is higher than Instagram. Facebook photo feeds are lower. If social media is a significant part of your daily phone use, it will dominate your data budget in a way that navigation and messaging will not.

Plan sizing by trip type

A five to seven day city break in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City is the simplest scenario to estimate. Hotels and cafes in these cities have generally good wifi, which covers the heavy activities like streaming and downloads. Mobile data is primarily used for navigation, messaging, social media while out, and occasional calls. A 3 GB plan is a comfortable fit for this itinerary with wifi as a backup. A 5 GB plan gives headroom for heavier social media use or a few evenings of mobile streaming if wifi is unavailable.

A standard two-week tourist route connecting Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City with some train travel in between uses more data simply because of the number of days and the navigation involved in moving between cities. A 5 to 8 GB plan covers this comfortably for a traveller with moderate social media use. The train sections have enough coverage for messaging and light browsing but are not the place for a long video download.

A month-long backpacker trip through Vietnam, including regional destinations like Sapa, Ha Giang, the Mekong Delta, and Phu Quoc, needs a 15 to 20 GB plan. The additional volume comes from a longer trip duration rather than from higher daily consumption. The Ha Giang Loop and the Ha Long cruise are actually low data periods despite being the most connectivity-relevant parts of the trip, because the lack of signal in the key sections means there is nothing to consume data on.

The Ha Giang Loop: a data calculation that inverts

The Ha Giang Loop is unique in Vietnam data planning because the normal calculation inverts. On a standard tourist itinerary, you use data continuously at a low rate throughout the day. On the Ha Giang Loop, you use data in intensive bursts at town stops and nothing between them. The mountain roads between Ha Giang, Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van, and Meo Vac have patchy to no signal. Ma Pi Leng Pass has no signal at all. The towns themselves have usable Viettel 4G.

The practical implication is that your data plan for the loop needs to be large enough for the preparation stage in Ha Giang city, not for continuous riding use. In Ha Giang city, you should download offline maps for the entire loop, confirm all guesthouse bookings, load emergency contact numbers, and do any content downloads for evening entertainment. Budget 200 to 500 MB for this preparation phase. Each town stop on the loop adds 50 to 100 MB for messaging, navigation updates, and check-ins. The total data cost for a five-day Ha Giang Loop is 1 to 2 GB, less than many travellers spend in a single afternoon in Ho Chi Minh City.

Ha Long Bay and Sapa: scheduled offline time

Ha Long Bay overnight cruises present a similar inversion to the Ha Giang Loop. The cruise itself is a period of very low data use because signal is absent in the inner bay for most of the overnight anchor. The data budget for a Ha Long cruise is front-loaded: download what you need before boarding at Ha Long city port, and plan the return journey from Cat Ba Island or the port after the cruise when you are back in coverage. The cruise period itself needs no data allocation because there is no network to use.

Sapa follows a different pattern. Sapa town has Viettel 4G throughout and is a normal data environment. The trekking routes descending from Sapa into the rice terrace valleys progressively lose signal as they move away from the town towers. For day treks that return to Sapa in the evening, the offline time is a few hours at most and requires minimal planning. For multi-day village homestay treks that take you several hours from the road network, plan for the overnight period to be offline and ensure your accommodation confirmations and route maps are available without data.

Remote work data planning: the video call dominates

For digital nomads and remote workers spending a month or more in Vietnam, the data calculation is dominated by video calls. A single hour of Zoom at 720p uses approximately 540 MB. Two hours of daily meetings consumes around 30 GB per month for meetings alone. Add cloud storage syncing, file uploads, and general work browsing, and the realistic monthly total for remote work in Vietnam is 40 to 60 GB. Co-working spaces in Da Nang, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh City have good wifi that covers the heaviest sessions, making an unlimited mobile data plan more of a safety net than a primary work connection. The mobile plan is for the evenings, the weekends, and the moments between co-working sessions.

Tet 2026: network load and what to expect

Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, falls on 17 February 2026, the start of the Year of the Horse. In the days immediately surrounding Tet, particularly 15 to 18 February, mobile networks in major cities experience significantly elevated load as Vietnamese families gather, video call relatives across the country, and social media traffic spikes. Speed reductions of 30 to 50% compared to normal conditions are common in urban areas during peak Tet periods. This is not a coverage failure but a congestion effect that resolves within a day or two as the holiday normalises. The offline maps rule

Pre-downloading offline maps for your Vietnam route is the single highest-return data management step available. This eliminates the navigation data cost entirely and provides reliable GPS positioning through every dead zone on the Ha Giang Loop, Ha Long Bay, and Sapa trekking routes.

Fixed GB or unlimited: the Vietnam-specific answer

For tourist itineraries in Vietnam, a fixed GB plan is almost always the right choice. Unlimited plans carry a price premium that is not justified unless you are doing daily video calls or sustained mobile streaming. A well-sized fixed plan costs less, covers everything a tourist needs, and leaves no money on the table. The threshold for unlimited is roughly this: if you have more than one hour of video calls per day, or if you stream video every evening on mobile data rather than hotel wifi, an unlimited plan becomes cost-competitive. Below that threshold, a 10 to 15 GB fixed plan covers a two-week trip and a 20 GB plan covers a month of backpacking comfortably.

The hybrid approach for long trips

For stays of three weeks or more, the most cost-effective approach is a moderate eSIM plan of 10 to 15 GB combined with deliberate wifi use at accommodation and co-working spaces for heavy tasks. Use mobile data for navigation and messaging throughout the day. Reserve large downloads and streaming for wifi in the evenings.
