The three operators and what they mean for travellers

Vietnam has three main mobile operators: Viettel, Vinaphone, and Mobifone. For a traveller using an international eSIM, the choice has already been made for them. The vast majority of international eSIM plans sold for Vietnam route through Viettel, which is the right call. Viettel is state-owned through the Ministry of National Defence and has received by far the largest infrastructure investment of any Vietnamese operator. Its 40,000 5G base stations and 90% population coverage as of early 2026 make it the dominant network in every scenario that matters for travel, from Da Nang's beachfront to Dong Van in the far north.

Vinaphone, operated by VNPT, is the second network and runs solid 4G in provincial capitals and along major highways. Mobifone focuses more heavily on urban areas. Neither approaches Viettel's rural depth. In the northern highlands, the Mekong Delta fringes, and on mountain routes, Viettel is the only operator with meaningful coverage. Travellers on a Vinaphone or Mobifone SIM who venture into the Ha Giang region or along the central highland routes will find coverage drops noticeably earlier and returns later than on Viettel.

Cities: where Vietnam's network is world-class

Da Nang is Vietnam's fastest city for mobile data and, with a January 2026 average of 677 Mbps, one of the fastest in Southeast Asia. Coverage is consistent across My Khe beach, the Son Tra peninsula, the city centre, and the bridge corridor. Remote workers who choose Da Nang are not compromising on connectivity. The combination of fast 5G, a compact urban layout, and reliable cafe wifi has made it one of the most practical remote work bases in the region.

Ho Chi Minh City averages around 620 Mbps on Viettel 5G. Districts 1, 3, and 7 are the densest coverage zones. The outer districts have patchier 5G but solid 4G fallback everywhere within the city limits. Hanoi runs slightly behind at around 600 Mbps, with the Old Quarter getting a mix of 4G and 5G, and Ba Dinh, Tay Ho, and the West Lake area delivering consistent 5G. Nha Trang's beach strip is strong at around 450 Mbps, though signal weakens on the boat routes to offshore islands. Hue and Hoi An are 4G-dominant but reliable enough for any standard travel use. Hoi An's Ancient Town in particular has dense enough cafe wifi that mobile data is largely a backup.

The north-south corridor: train, bus and what to expect

The Reunification Express train between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City covers 1,726 km through 35 stations. For most of its route it follows the coast, which keeps it within mobile coverage zones. The Hanoi to Vinh section runs across flat Red River Delta terrain with strong 4G and 5G throughout and minimal interruption. From Vinh south to Da Nang the coverage becomes more variable: coastal stretches are solid, the Hai Van Pass tunnel drops signal for around six minutes, and the mountain sections north of Da Nang have gaps of similar duration. From Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City the route returns to good coastal coverage, with gaps on the inland highland sections between Quy Nhon and Nha Trang where the road cuts through mountainous terrain.

Sleeper buses that cut inland through the Central Highlands via Dalat, Kon Tum, or Pleiku lose signal for significantly longer stretches than the coastal train. If staying connected matters, the train is the more reliable long-distance option. Either way, downloading offline entertainment and maps before departure remains sensible. The signal will return, but not always when you want it.

Ha Giang Loop: the honest coverage picture

The Ha Giang Loop is Vietnam's most dramatic motorcycle route and its most instructive test of mobile network limits. The 350 km circuit through Dong Van, Meo Vac, and Ma Pi Leng Pass goes through terrain where infrastructure of any kind is sparse. Ha Giang city itself has full 4G and 5G. This is the place to download offline maps, confirm guesthouse bookings, and load any content that needs data. Once you leave the city heading north, the coverage becomes patchy on Viettel and effectively absent on other operators.

From Quan Ba to Yen Minh, Viettel 4G appears between villages and disappears on the mountain roads between them. From Yen Minh to Dong Van the gaps lengthen. Dong Van town has usable Viettel 4G. Ma Pi Leng Pass, the 20 km section crossing the canyon above the Nho Que River, has no mobile signal of any kind. It is one of the most photographed landscapes in Vietnam and one of its most consistent dead zones. Signal returns when the road descends into Meo Vac valley. The practical implication is simple: treat the Ha Giang Loop as an offline route with connectivity islands in the valley towns. Download everything before Ha Giang city, plan calls and check-ins for meal stops, and do not rely on navigation apps while riding the high mountain sections.

Ha Long Bay: karst geography against mobile signals

Ha Long Bay presents a fundamentally different coverage problem from the highlands. It is not about altitude or distance from towers but about geometry. The 1,969 limestone karst islands rise vertically from the water and effectively block signal propagation across the bay. Coverage is excellent at Ha Long city port and near shore. Once a cruise vessel moves into the inner bay, past the first ring of karst formations, signal drops and does not reliably return until the boat turns back toward the harbour.

Most overnight cruises spend six to twelve hours anchored in the inner bay or Lan Ha Bay. This is scheduled offline time. Cat Ba Island town has reliable Viettel 4G, and the island is a practical base for day trips into the bay. The Cat Ba Island interior and the national park road network lose signal as they climb away from the coast. The practical preparation for any Ha Long cruise is the same as for island ferries elsewhere: download offline maps of Cat Ba and the bay, screenshot accommodation confirmations, and inform contacts you will be unreachable for the overnight period.

Mekong Delta and southern rural coverage

The Mekong Delta covers a vast area of southern Vietnam across provinces including Can Tho, Ben Tre, Vinh Long, and Chau Doc. Can Tho, the region's largest city, has Viettel 5G and strong 4G throughout the urban area. Provincial capitals and district towns across the delta have reliable Viettel 4G. The challenge is the waterway network between settlements, where open river sections drop signal for minutes at a time before it returns on approach to the next town. For travellers doing delta boat tours or staying in remote homestays between main towns, plan for intermittent connectivity rather than continuous coverage. The border crossing at Moc Bai into Cambodia has good Vietnamese 4G on the Vietnamese side up to the crossing point.

Sapa, Phu Quoc, and the coastal resorts

Sapa town has Viettel 4G that is reliable in the town centre and along the main tourist promenade. The rice terrace trekking routes descending from Sapa toward the Muong Hoa valley and the ethnic minority villages lose signal progressively as they drop into the valleys and move away from the town's towers. The Fansipan cable car and summit area have intermittent Viettel signal that works well enough for a photo upload but not a sustained call. The multi-day trekking routes that take you overnight into village homestays several hours from Sapa should be treated as offline for the portions away from the main road.

Phu Quoc island has seen significant infrastructure investment alongside its tourism boom. The main west coast tourist strip from Duong Dong town to Long Beach and north toward Vinpearl has good 4G throughout. The east coast resorts also have reliable coverage. The national park in the island's north, which comprises most of the land area, thins significantly off the main roads. The ferry to smaller nearby islands like Koh Rong has the same offshore dead zone as every inter-island crossing in the region.

What 40,000 base stations means in practice

Vietnam's 40,000 5G base station deployment is a real commitment concentrated in urban cores and transport corridors. The coverage profile it produces is one of the most reliable in Southeast Asia for urban tourists and one of the most predictable in its gaps. The gaps are geographical: highlands above a certain elevation, open water, and the specific remote routes like Ha Giang where infrastructure density follows population density. Outside those zones, a traveller moving between Vietnam's cities and major tourist areas will find connectivity simply is not a concern worth spending time on. The 90% population coverage figure is accurate in what it implies: almost everywhere people live and congregate, the network works well. The places where it does not are the places where people and towers are both scarce, and knowing those places in advance is the only planning needed.

Vietnam as a remote work base

Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City consistently rank among the best-connected cities in Southeast Asia for digital nomads. Da Nang at 677 Mbps average, combined with affordable co-working spaces and Vietnam's 90-day e-visa renewable in-country, makes it a practical long-stay base. Connectivity here is a selling point rather than a consideration to manage.
