Telkomsel dominant on outer islands; Bali well covered, remote dive sites weak.
Indonesia spans 17,000+ islands, so coverage is the whole story. Java and Bali have excellent 4G (95%+ with Telkomsel, XL and Indosat), with real-world Bali 4G speeds around 15-40 Mbps, ample for maps, streaming and remote work. 5G is still limited, mostly Jakarta's CBD and parts of Bali, so 4G is what matters for most travellers. Remote islands such as Nusa Penida, Komodo and Raja Ampat can be patchy or have no service; on those, Telkomsel is the only carrier with a real chance of signal.
Typical local SIM: $Very cheap locally: roughly 3-5 USD for 7-20GB valid 14-30 days at a convenience store. Travel eSIMs start around 6.50 USD for 10GB/30 days.. Usually sold at Airport counters at Jakarta (CGK) and Bali (DPS), official Telkomsel GraPARI / XL / Indosat stores, and Indomaret / Alfamart / Circle K convenience stores. Passport required to register (mandatory since 2018).. Airport SIM counters work but often quote double the package rate to tourists, so ask the price first. A SIM keeps one number across multiple islands. Telkomsel is the safe pick if your itinerary leaves Bali or Java.
Buy a Telkomsel-backed eSIM before you fly if your trip leaves Bali or Java, and you land connected with the one network that reaches the remote islands. Bali-only and budget-focused? A cheap local SIM in town beats everything. We tell you that because it is true.
Largest carrier (~52% share) and by far the most reliable nationwide, including remote islands like Raja Ampat, Komodo and Flores. The default choice for any trip beyond Bali and Java. Most quality travel eSIMs route through Telkomsel.
Budget-friendly with good coverage in Bali and Java cities. Weaker beyond Bali/Java; not ideal for rural or remote-island travel.
Decent in cities and tourist areas, not as strong nationwide as Telkomsel. Fine for short city or Bali-only stays.
Short trips, or any time you want to land at Bali or Jakarta connected and skip the airport SIM counter, where tourists are routinely overcharged. Convenience and a pre-flight purchase are the draw.
Most trips on pure price, if you can wait until town. A local Telkomsel pack is far cheaper per GB. For long stays or if you need an Indonesian number, a local Telkomsel SIM via their app or a GraPARI store wins.
No first-hand measurement has been published for Indonesia yet. This page will update automatically when a validated field test is added to the shared dataset.
Use this page to compare the current price per GB, network indicator, transparency signal and local-operator reference for Indonesia. It also links to a destination calculator and plan page.
It is the median price per GB of mid-tier plans in the live Indonesia catalogue. Small 1 GB teasers and 50 GB or larger bulk plans are excluded so the figure reflects a typical traveller choice.
The page shows the current mobile speed indicator, a transparency score and the main local operator. These are destination-level signals, not a guarantee for every street or device.
The decision section compares the practical trade-offs. A travel eSIM is usually simpler for a short visit; a local SIM can make sense when you need a local number, longer service or local pricing. Check the current conditions before deciding.
Price per GB is the median of mid-tier plans from the live Indonesia catalogue. Network and transparency indicators come from the shared Drift dataset and are refreshed monthly.
