Device compatibility: what works in Indonesia

Indonesia's mobile network operates on standard international frequency bands that are compatible with eSIM-capable devices from any market. Telkomsel's 4G LTE uses the 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 2100 MHz bands. Its Hyper 5G uses Sub-6 GHz spectrum. These are the same bands used across most of Southeast Asia and Europe, meaning a device that works with an eSIM in France or Japan will work on Telkomsel in Indonesia without band-specific compatibility issues.

The compatibility question for Indonesia is the same as for any eSIM market: whether your specific device supports eSIM at all, and whether it is carrier-locked to a home operator that prevents international eSIM use. iPhone XS and later support eSIM. iPhone 14 and later sold outside the United States support dual eSIM. Flagship Android devices from Samsung (S21 series and later), Google Pixel (4 and later), and OnePlus support eSIM. Mid-range and budget Android devices are model-dependent. The carrier lock check on iPhone is at Settings, General, About, Carrier Lock. An unlocked device reads No SIM Restrictions.

Installing on iPhone: the complete process

Install the eSIM at home using a WiFi connection before your departure day. Open Settings, then Cellular or Mobile Service depending on your iOS version, then Add Cellular Plan or Add eSIM. The camera opens to scan the QR code provided by your eSIM provider. Scan the code in good light with the phone held steady. The plan details appear and you confirm. The eSIM profile downloads in 30 to 60 seconds over WiFi. Do not use cellular data for the initial eSIM download if it can be avoided. Use WiFi at home or at the departure airport lounge.

After installation, label the eSIM clearly, for example Indonesia, so you can identify it among multiple lines in the cellular settings. Set it as the active data line under Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data. If you are using dual SIM with your home number on a physical SIM, assign the home SIM to voice calls and the Indonesia eSIM to data. The critical final step is enabling Data Roaming specifically on the Indonesia eSIM line, not the home SIM. This setting is under Settings, Cellular, the Indonesia eSIM name, Data Roaming. Without it enabled, the eSIM installs correctly but shows no service on arrival in Indonesia.

Installing on Android

On Samsung Galaxy devices, the eSIM path is typically Settings, Connections, SIM Manager, Add Mobile Plan, then Add Using QR Code. On Google Pixel, the path is Settings, Network and Internet, SIMs, Add a SIM, then scan via QR code. Both processes require WiFi for the profile download. After installation, navigate to the SIM management settings and set the Indonesia eSIM as the preferred data SIM. Enable Data Roaming on the Indonesia eSIM line specifically, as this setting often defaults to off for newly added SIMs and its absence is the most common cause of no-service errors on arrival.

Activating on arrival in Indonesia

The eSIM connects to the Indonesian network automatically when your phone detects Telkomsel's signal on arrival, provided the eSIM is installed, set as the data line, and has Data Roaming enabled. The most reliable activation sequence is to enable airplane mode before landing and disable it after the aircraft parks. This forces an immediate network search. Telkomsel has strong signal in the arrivals hall of both Ngurah Rai in Bali and Soekarno-Hatta in Jakarta. The eSIM typically connects within two to three minutes of airplane mode being disabled. Confirm connectivity is working before leaving the arrivals hall, since you need the connection to book a Grab or Blue Bird taxi for the onward journey.

If the eSIM does not connect within five minutes, toggle airplane mode a second time. If still no connection, check that Data Roaming is enabled on the eSIM line in the cellular settings. If Data Roaming is confirmed on and the eSIM is set as the data line but still shows no service, try manually selecting Telkomsel in network settings. On iPhone, this is Settings, Cellular, Network Selection, Manual, then select Telkomsel from the list. On Android, this is typically Settings, Mobile Network, Network Operators, Search. If Telkomsel appears and connects on manual selection, the eSIM is functional and the auto-selection issue is a minor configuration problem that resolves itself once the manual selection is confirmed.

The SIM registration advantage of eSIM in Indonesia

Every physical SIM sold in Indonesia since 2018 requires biometric registration under Indonesian government regulations. Buyers must provide their passport, and the retailer enters the IMEI of the phone the SIM will be used in. At major airport counters staffed by trained operators, this process takes five to fifteen minutes per transaction. At smaller shops in cities, staff may struggle with foreign passport formats in the registration system, and some travellers have reported needing multiple attempts or being directed to a dedicated carrier shop. The registration is mandatory and cannot be bypassed. An eSIM purchased from an international provider requires none of this. The purchase and installation happen before arrival with no Indonesian registration requirement. This is the most practical daily advantage of eSIM over a local physical SIM for Indonesian travel.

Common errors and fixes

The QR code scans but the profile does not download: this is almost always a WiFi issue during the download. Move to a stronger WiFi connection and retry. eSIM QR codes are single-use. If the code was consumed but the profile did not install, contact the provider for a replacement activation link. The eSIM installs but shows no service in Indonesia: check Data Roaming is enabled on the eSIM line, confirm the eSIM is set as the active data line, and toggle airplane mode. If still failing, manually select Telkomsel in network settings. The eSIM disappears after an iOS or Android update: the profile has been deleted. Contact the provider for a new activation link. Keep the original QR code screenshot and provider order confirmation accessible for this scenario.

Using your eSIM as a hotspot in Indonesia

Most Indonesia eSIM plans include hotspot or tethering capability. Enable personal hotspot through your phone settings as standard. The data consumption for hotspot use is roughly 1.5 to 2 times the phone-only rate for the same activities, because laptop browsers and applications are less data-efficient than mobile apps. In practical terms for Indonesia: using your eSIM to hotspot a laptop in a Bali villa on a day when the accommodation WiFi is down will consume data at a faster rate than phone-only browsing. Plan for this if your itinerary includes co-working from non-WiFi environments.

Nyepi preparation: the eSIM consideration

If your Indonesia itinerary includes Bali around 19 March 2026, the eSIM setup process has one additional step: ensuring everything is installed, active, and working before Nyepi begins at 6am on 19 March. Hotel WiFi remains available during Nyepi, so the eSIM setup itself can happen on hotel WiFi before the mobile data shutdown. What matters is that any plan top-up, activation troubleshooting, or support contact needed is resolved before the mobile network shutdown, since the eSIM provider's support channels require your own connectivity to access.

Pre-departure checklist for Indonesia

eSIM installed and labelled in Settings. Data Roaming enabled on the Indonesia eSIM line. Indonesia eSIM set as the active data line. Gojek and Grab installed and payment method added before arrival. WhatsApp verified on home SIM. Offline maps downloaded for first destination. QR code screenshot saved to cloud storage. For Nyepi travellers: all of the above confirmed working before 6am on 19 March.
