Naha is your prep window for the outer islands

Naha Airport and the city have solid coverage from multiple operators. Before boarding any ferry or inter-island flight to the Yaeyama group, download offline maps of every island on your route, screenshot accommodation bookings, and save any activity confirmations. Iriomote's river treks and mangrove tours operate in areas with no signal at all.

Getting between islands: ferry and flight connectivity

  • Naha to Ishigaki: either by flight (1 hour, good connectivity at both airports) or ferry (19+ hours, effectively offline for most of the crossing). Most travelers fly.
  • Ishigaki to Iriomote: short ferry crossing (30 to 40 min). Brief dead zone on the water. Download maps in Ishigaki before boarding.
  • Ishigaki to Taketomi: 10-minute ferry. Enough time to lose signal briefly.
  • Inter-island flights within Okinawa: coverage at all airports. Brief dead zone during the flight itself.

The Okinawa data budget

3 GBOne week on the main island. Maps, social, light navigation.
5 GBOne week including Ishigaki and Miyako island hopping.
7 GBTwo weeks covering the main island plus multiple outer islands.
The Iriomote difference

Iriomote is one of the most pristine and biodiverse islands in Japan: 90% jungle, world-class river trekking and mangrove kayaking. It also has almost no mobile coverage beyond the port towns. Plan your Iriomote time as a deliberately offline experience, prepare in Ishigaki, and enjoy the wilderness without worrying about the signal icon.
