Japan is one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, which creates a paradox for a traveler: the cities are extraordinarily well connected, the Shinkansen maintains signal for most of its routes, and 5G is live in all major centers. Yet some of Japan's most beautiful destinations, rural Tohoku mountain passes, parts of Shikoku, remote Okinawan islands, and the backcountry hiking routes that draw serious travelers, have real signal gaps. Choosing the right eSIM for Japan means choosing the right operator for your route, which in most cases means choosing Docomo.

The network landscape in 2026

Japan has four national mobile operators, but for a foreign traveler the decision simplifies to three: NTT Docomo, KDDI (au) and SoftBank. Rakuten Mobile is the fourth operator but is not used by virtually any travel eSIM provider and is not relevant to this guide.

The 5G tourist eSIM trap

Many travel eSIMs marketed for Japan restrict foreign travelers to 4G LTE even where 5G is available, either because the international roaming agreement does not include 5G access or because providers use lower-cost 4G-only plans. If 5G speeds matter to you, verify explicitly that your chosen plan includes 5G access before purchasing. 4G in Japan is fast enough for most travel use, but the gap is worth knowing about.

Japan's connectivity is a geography story. The Golden Route (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima) is essentially perfect. The further you go from that corridor, the more operator choice starts to matter.

Shinkansen connectivity

The bullet train is where Japan's connectivity gets interesting. Most Shinkansen lines maintain 4G signal for the majority of the route, but tunnels, of which there are many on Japan's mountainous routes, create brief but regular dead zones. The Tokyo to Osaka route on the Tokaido Shinkansen holds signal well. The Hokkaido Shinkansen going through the Seikan Tunnel has a significant underground stretch. Long-distance night routes through mountain tunnels can see intermittent drops.

  • Download offline maps and entertainment before boarding any long-distance Shinkansen.
  • The Tokyo to Kyoto and Kyoto to Osaka segments are well covered. The Sanyo Shinkansen west to Hiroshima has more tunnel gaps.
  • Send time-sensitive messages before entering known tunnel-heavy sections.
  • Shinkansen Wi-Fi is available on most JR services, variable in quality. Your eSIM is the more reliable backup.

Suica, IC cards and why they matter for your data

Japan's IC card system is the transport equivalent of Singapore's EZ-Link: load it once and tap through every train gate, bus and most convenience stores without thinking. Unlike in Vietnam or Indonesia where you need live data to book transport, Japan's entire public transport system runs on prepaid IC cards requiring zero data per journey. This fundamentally reduces your mobile data dependency compared to other Asian countries.

The Suica-on-iPhone option

iPhone users can add Suica directly to Apple Wallet (iPhone 7 or later) and use their phone to tap through gates, even without mobile data, even if the battery is below 1%, using the Express Card feature. Google Pay supports IC cards on Android as well. Many travelers never need a physical IC card at all.

How much data Japan needs

Japan uses less data than Vietnam or Indonesia for a specific reason: transport needs almost no data. Suica gets you on every train and bus. Google Maps downloads well offline. The main data consumers are navigation in dense cities (even offline maps are massive for Tokyo), translation apps running constantly, and social posting. Japan is a heavy photography destination.

Visit Japan Web: mandatory before landing

Japan's Visit Japan Web system is mandatory for fast-track immigration and customs. Complete it online before you fly. At Narita or Haneda, show the QR code at the customs lane instead of filling out a paper form. It typically takes 15 to 30 minutes outside peak hours. Without it, you join the paper-form queue. Japan's eVISA system has expanded to more nationalities in 2025, simplifying the application process for visitors who need one.
