The Philippines mobile network: two operators that matter
The Philippine mobile market is effectively a two-operator competition between Globe Telecom and Smart Communications (a PLDT subsidiary). A third operator, DITO Telecommunity, launched in 2021 and has expanded coverage in urban areas, but remains too limited for reliable travel eSIM use in 2026. Globe and Smart have meaningfully different coverage profiles across the archipelago. Globe has the wider geographic reach across more islands and is often the stronger choice for island-hopping itineraries that include smaller or more remote destinations. Smart leads on 5G speed in metro Manila and major urban centers, with a median download speed around 25 Mbps on 5G connections. Both operators have competitive 4G coverage in the main tourist destinations -- Manila, Cebu, Palawan, Boracay, and Siargao all have functional 4G on both networks.
Most international travel eSIM providers connect to Globe or Smart, with Globe being the more common default. The practical coverage difference between the two on popular tourist routes is small. The difference becomes more significant when traveling to less-visited islands, where Globe's wider island network tends to give it an edge. DITO is not relevant for travel eSIM users and not discussed further in this guide.
