The MRT: Singapore's backbone

Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit runs across six lines covering the entire island. For tourists, it connects Changi Airport to the city center, every major hotel district, Orchard Road shopping, Marina Bay Sands, Chinatown, Little India, Sentosa gateway, and the zoo. Fares are distance-based and cheap by any international standard.

SimplyGo: the zero-setup option

Since 2019, Singapore MRT and buses support contactless payment via any Visa or Mastercard directly at the fare gate. No EZ-Link card, no app, no data needed. Tap your credit card in, tap out, fare deducted automatically. For a short visit where you cannot be bothered with a separate card, this is the simplest option, though per-journey costs are slightly higher than an EZ-Link card.

Grab in Singapore

Grab operates extensively across Singapore and is cheaper and more transparent than hailing a street taxi for most journeys. The app shows the fare before you confirm, drivers are rated, and payment is cashless by default.

  • Download Grab before you arrive. Set up card payment in the app.
  • For Changi Airport pickup: use the Grab app and follow the in-app instructions to the designated pickup point for your terminal. Do not stand at the taxi rank expecting a Grab.
  • GrabFood is the dominant food delivery app alongside Foodpanda. Both deliver from hawker centres, restaurants and convenience stores.
  • Peak hour surge pricing applies. If the MRT covers your journey, it is almost always cheaper and faster during rush hours.
Airport pickup at Changi

Grab pickup at Changi Airport requires using the in-app designated pickup zones, which differ by terminal. T1, T2, T3 and T4 each have specific Grab pickup points accessible from the arrivals area. The app will navigate you to the right spot. Do not stand at the general taxi rank expecting a Grab driver to find you.

How much data transport apps use

~3 MBPer Grab ride booking and completion.
~30 MBA full day of Grab rides and GrabFood orders.
~0 MBMRT and bus with EZ-Link or SimplyGo tap. No data needed.

The MRT and bus system requires zero data once you have a card. Grab is efficient and light. Singapore transport is the lowest-data transport system of any major Asian city because the physical infrastructure is so complete.
