What Nyepi is and why it matters for connectivity

Nyepi is the Balinese Hindu New Year, marking the start of the Saka calendar year. Unlike most New Year celebrations characterised by noise and festivity, Nyepi is defined by complete silence and stillness. The four rules of Nyepi, known as Catur Brata Penyepian, prohibit fire and light, working, travelling, and entertainment. These four prohibitions have been interpreted in the modern era to include mobile internet under the entertainment prohibition, and since 2018, Indonesian mobile operators have agreed to suspend cellular data across Bali for the 24-hour Nyepi period.

Voice calls may also be affected depending on operator implementation, though this varies. Hotel and resort WiFi via fibre-optic connections is explicitly confirmed to remain available, as authorities determined that fibre WiFi is necessary for essential services and does not violate the spirit of Nyepi in the same way that cellular networks do.

The Ogoh-Ogoh parade: the evening before

The evening before Nyepi, on Wednesday 18 March 2026, is the Ogoh-Ogoh parade. Giant papier-mache demon effigies representing evil spirits are carried through the streets of every Balinese village and town in noisy processions that last from late afternoon into the night. The processions are open to visitors and are one of the most visually spectacular cultural events in Bali. Connectivity during the Ogoh-Ogoh parade is normal: mobile data is fully operational on 18 March, and photographing, posting, and navigating between parade locations all work as usual.

The second preparation priority is communication. Send any time-sensitive messages to contacts before the shutdown. Standard SMS and mobile-network calls may be restricted. Tell the relevant people the situation before the shutdown begins rather than after, when reaching them is more complicated.

The restrictions of Nyepi prohibit leaving your accommodation, making noise, turning on external lights, and using entertainment that disturbs the silence. Within your accommodation, the day is largely unrestricted. Reading, writing, working on offline tasks, watching downloaded content, meditating, sleeping, and using the hotel's internal facilities are all permitted. WiFi-based communication, including WhatsApp calls, email, and messaging, is available where hotel WiFi is operational. The restrictions are about the external environment rather than internal activity.

For travellers who accept the premise of Nyepi rather than fighting it, the day often becomes a genuinely memorable experience. The absolute stillness of a normally busy tourist island for 24 hours is unusual enough to be notable in itself. The absence of traffic, construction noise, and the constant movement of a tourist economy creates a silence that is rare in Bali on any other day of the year. Many travellers who experience Nyepi describe it as one of the more memorable days of their Indonesia trip despite, or because of, the connectivity restrictions.

The day after: connectivity resumes

At 6am on Friday 20 March 2026, Nyepi ends and normal Bali resumes with characteristic abruptness. Roads open, shops reopen, the airport returns to operations, and mobile data on all operators is restored. The Ngembak Geni celebration that follows Nyepi involves Balinese families visiting neighbours and relatives, filling the streets with the social activity that was absent for 24 hours. For travellers, 20 March is a normal connectivity day from 6am. Any messages queued on hotel WiFi calling overnight, or any posts drafted for offline upload, can be sent from 6am on mobile data. The return to full connectivity is immediate and complete.
